Southern Explorer
A Cultural Experience
The Southern Explorer is proud to feature some of the
country's most talented artists, crafters, culture
programmes and music venues and owes its current success
to the many individuals who worked with tourism to develop
a craft route in 1996.
The Southern Explorer now is more than a craft route, and
brings many different KwaZulu-Natal South Coast
attractions to visitors. The Southern Explorer salutes
each and every individual who strives to create their own
piece of paradise for all of us to enjoy.
Every year the Southern Explorer will take on a cultural
project that will uplift tourism in our area, ensuring
that new and exciting destinations are profiled within the
Southern Explorer. This is only made possible through our
proud relationship with the Ugu District Municipality.
This year The Southern Explorer has undertaken to give
support to the Bhoshongweni Art and Craft Centre and
Execution Rock. For more information on these projects.
Take some time out during your visit and discover what
these talents have to offer. To help you start this
journey why don??t you visit one of 15 upliftment tourism
projects that are sponsored by the Ugu District
Municipality. These projects are highlighted by the Ugu
District Municipality logo. These projects range from
beautifully made sewing and crocheting products, to a
station and rural and township tours. Participate in
South Africa??s first tourism initiative that is entirely
owned by the Pondo people. Visit the beautiful art
galleries scattered along the coast or the many talented
craftsmen.
Next, explore one of the few remaining indigenous forests
and meet the leather workers. Enhance your personal
creativity by partaking in art making sessions or visit
the studio of uniquely created hand painted/dyed range of
clothing.
Spend some time at the many establishments that bring the
best of South African music to our coast ?? hosting and
promoting top class musicians and bands from all over
South Africa. Last but not least, listen to jazz in the
garden on a Sunday afternoon, or a top rock band at a
leading establishment on the beach, or just dance the
night away at top nightclub.
From curious artefacts and antiques recalling a bygone era
to the latest in designer fashions, the KwaZulu-Natal
South Coast has just the shop for you.
The Shelly Centre is the largest shopping mall on the
coast with over 100 tantalising shops. There is a broad
variety of restaurants and coffee shops catering for all
tastes, and while you shop let the kids catch a movie in
one of the six cinemas.
If it??s a bargain you??re hunting for, head for the
bustling Port Shepstone CBD which is famous for its
aromatic Indian markets, spice shops and colourful trading
stores.
Visit the small coastal towns and soak in the holiday
atmosphere that prevails all year round. Get with the
vibe and choose some trendy beach gear from one of the
many modern surfing shops or browse along the beachfront
where you will find African curios and many other gifts to
remember your holidays by.
Take some time, you deserve it, ramble through our
villages, discover the local talent, or visit an art
gallery or antique shop.
If this is not your scene, head to the hills for a unique
experience, barter with the local crafters making unique
hand-made products and take home a piece of our paradise. |
